As of March 27, there have been no reports of COVID-19 infection in Hida-Takayama. However, it is currently difficult to purchase masks and alcohol disinfectant in the city. It is recommended that clients bring these items with them, wear a mask, and regularly wash and disinfect their hands as appropriate.

Discover Traditional Life in Hida area 3nights/4days

If you like to touch the Japanese life dating back to the olden times, we recommend this itinerary. You will see a beautiful nostalgic landscape of Minka (old folk houses) dotted in vast rice fields and you may have a chance to talk to locals by joining the cycling tour.

 

Highlights

  • Okuhida: One of the most remarkable Onsen (hot spring) villages. You can enjoy open-air bath while listening to the murmur of the river. Stay in one of the best Ryokan in the area.
  • Hida Satoyama Cycling: Casual bike ride through the Japanese countryside, Satoyama, and meet the locals.
  • Shirakawa-go : You will be inspired by traditional wooden architectures “Gassho-zukuri” which only exist in this snowy area.

Day 1

Travel from Tokyo to Okuhida Onsen

Travel to Okuhida Onsen from Tokyo (4.5h)
Okuhida Onsen-go area is situated at the base of the Japan Alps, the onsen here have some of the most dramatic settings in Japan.
Stay in modern Japanese Ryokan and enjoy dinner set by irori fireplace.

Day 2

Enjoy Takayama

Enjoy morning bath and go to Takayama (1h). Hida Takayama in the northern part of Gifu Prefecture is a castle town surrounded by mountains. Takayama is best known for its carpenters, who worked on the imperial palace in Kyoto and on many of the temples in Nara. Like a few cities, Takayama has retained its full atmosphere of the Edo period thanks to its preserved old districts, temples, shrines, antique shops and sake breweries.

Day 3

Cycling through the countryside

Take a train to Hida Furukawa (20min from Takayama Station), a small cozy town with lots of attractions.

The 3-hour bike trail will give you the exposure to the authentic country life in Hida.

Day 4

Shirakawa-go daytrip / Travel to your next destination

Shirakawa-go is one of the exclusive places in Japan to see traditional masterpieces called Gassho-zukuri houses.
Several thatched-roof buildings in the Village are open to the public.
